Life Story for Mamma Rosa Ferrari (Panetta)

Mamma Rosa Ferrari (Panetta)
SCHENECTADY—Mamma Rosa Ferrari, 91, entered into the arms of the lord, to join her beloved husband, Francesco and her son, Johnny, at home on January 23rd.

Rosa was born in Panetta, Fontechiari, Province of Frosinone, Italy on April 17, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Pietro and Angela Gizzi Panetta. She immigrated to the United States on March 26, 1948; she always told everyone that it was the proudest day of her life. Upon arriving to Schenectady, she worked for her father at Panetta’s tavern on Front Street. She met her adored husband, Francesco G. Ferrari and they married in Toronto on September 27, 1952. Together, they had four sons and Mamma Rosa would thank God every day for her four beautiful gifts from God.

In 1974, Rosa and her family opened Ferrari’s Ristorante on Congress Street; from then on she came to be known as “Mamma Rosa” to all her family, friends and customers. Besides being one of Schenectady’s greatest chefs, Mamma was a dedicated communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at which she was a member of the Madonna della Libera Society, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Women’s Society and the Laziale Society.

Mamma Rosa had a deep devotion to her Catholic faith. For many years, she led pilgrimages to the shrines of Quebec, San Gennaro, and St. Gerard’s in Newark, NJ. These religious journeys became legendary among the community. She also ran many local prayer groups at which the Rosary and the Mass were Prominent. When she and Francesco hung up their aprons and began to supervise the restaurant, they bought a home in Deltona, Florida. There they enjoyed many winters and also participated in many prayer groups.

To her devoted family and friends, Mamma was known as the life of the party and she was often seen dancing with a gallon of wine on her head. Mamma always loved to live life to the fullest. She was an avid traveler, gardener and a connoisseur of fine homemade wine. But of most importance to Mamma was her family. Her quick wit and life lessons were always shared with a smile. Mamma loved to sing; she would entertain her customers at Ferrari’s with her most favorite Italian songs, but to her last day, her favorite song was God Bless America, because she was so proud to be an American.

Mamma was the most beautiful person, with the most beautiful heart and smile. She taught us all so many wonderful lessons but the most important was to work hard, feed each other, love each other and never pass up a good glass of homemade wine.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francesco G. Ferrari; her precious son, Johnny Ferrari; siblings, Brigida (Giuseppe) Ruzza, Modesto (Rose) Panetta and Antonio (Marie) Panetta; and her nephew, Anthony Panetta, Jr.

Survivors include her loving and devoted sons, Vincent (Carol) Ferrari, Anthony (Rossana) Ferrari, Joseph (Colleen) Ferrari; adoring grandchildren, Anthony (Daniel Wynn) Ferrari, John (Joshua Bass) Ferrari, Angela (Robert) Ferrari-Antoniak, Joseph (Meghan) Ferrari, Julianna Ferrari and Michael (Amber) Palleschi; cherished great-grandchildren, Tristan and Lilly Palleschi; loving brother, Peter (Marie) Panetta; Nieces and nephews, Anna (Fred) Taber, Angela (Richard) Salla, Angela (the late Patrick) Sena, Gary Panetta, Rosemary Panetta, Peter (Margie) Panetta and Marianne Panetta; she is also survived by many extended nieces, nephews and wonderful customers and friends.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Angela Tebano, Arnie, Kristen, De’Yona, John Payne, Dr. Reyes, Dr. Vacca and the entire staff at Ferrari’s Ristorante for their loving support, tender care, devotion and love shown to Mamma Rosa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 29th at 11 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church, 816 Union Street. Entombment to follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Glenville.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at St. John the Evangelist Church on Thursday evening from 4 until 8 PM. In honor of Mamma Rosa’s devotion to the Blessed Mother, the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will promptly begin at 8 PM.
